Over the last half decade, cold brew coffee has become the rockstar of the iced coffee world. Due to its quality, it has replaced standard iced coffee on the menus of many cafes including here at Compass Coffee. The key distinction between cold brew and iced coffee is that hot water never comes in contact with coffee grounds while brewing cold brew. And if done correctly, the cold brew process can highlight the nuances of coffee beans as well as, if not better than, most brewing methods.
OVERNIGHT COLD BREW GUIDE
Though it requires a bit of foresight, brewing cold brew is a relatively uninvolved affair.
Step 1
Carefully measure your beans. For this recipe, we're using 49g of beans for 850ml of water. When in doubt, remember: 1 part coffee to 16 parts water!
Step 2
Place your container the scale and fill with medium-coarse to coarsely ground beans.
Step 3
Place your container the scale and fill with medium-coarse to coarsely ground beans. Be sure the ground coffee equals the weight of the whole bean coffee. Tare your scale to zero.
Step 4
Pour cold water over the beans, rotating the container to ensure all the beans are coated.
Step 5
Lightly press the plunger. Do not fully submerge the plunger. The goal is to make sure all the beans are fully submerged and extracting.
Step 6
Place the container in your fridge. Wait at least 12 hours and up to 24 hours for the coffee to extract.
Step 7
After the time has passed, fully submerge the plunger. Pour the cold brew into your preferred container for travel or storage (a mason jar works great), and remember - serve chilled!
