Georgetown’s Historic Theater: Rebuilding a Community Staple

Georgetown’s Historic Theater: Rebuilding a Community Staple

Georgetown’s Historic Theater: Rebuilding a Community Staple

From day one, when we first opened the doors of our first cafe and roastery in Shaw, we had our sights set on Georgetown. We knew that once we were in one of DC's most iconic neighborhoods, we'd made it as a local staple. So when we saw that the historic Georgetown Theater was being sold by its previous owner, we knew it was the perfect opportunity. We could finally join the neighborhood, preserve a piece of history, and make it a lively part of the community again. After time, research, and a little bit of elbow grease, Compass Coffee finally opened its doors in 2019 inside this iconic building, blending the past with the present to create a welcoming gathering place.

A Journey Through Time: From Playhouse to Coffeehouse

Dumbarton Theatre D.C. circa 1930

Georgetown Theater as The National Jewel Center circa 2012

The story of this space goes back more than a century. Originally opened as the Dumbarton Theatre in August 1913, this 460-seat playhouse was designed by architect William Nichols in the Gothic Revival style. Over time, it transitioned into a movie house, becoming a beloved local destination for filmgoers. In 1950, after a sleek, modern remodel in the Streamline Moderne style, it was renamed the Georgetown Theatre, further cementing its status as a neighborhood landmark. Though it closed its doors as a theater in 1986 and was later repurposed for retail, its legacy endured.

From it’s start screening classic Hollywood films to becoming a local jewelry store, it’s been a cornerstone of the community for decades. With this in mind, we knew we had a big challenge ahead: to preserve its past while infusing it with the warmth and energy that makes Compass special.

A Theater Transformed

Walking up to our Georgetown cafe, the first thing you’ll notice is the original neon “Georgetown” sign, now fully restored to its former glory. A glowing staple on Wisconsin Avenue, it pays tribute to the building’s rich history while inviting in a new generation of coffee lovers.

Step inside, and the details tell the story. The original hand-drawn architectural design from 1949 hangs proudly on the walls, a reminder of the craftsmanship that first shaped this space. The historic marquee awning has been carefully rebuilt, complete with 1940s-inspired lighting that evokes the golden age of cinema. Even the espresso bar is a nod to its theatrical roots — designed in the style of an old-school ticket counter, lined with marquee bulbs that cast a warm glow over every latte and freshly brewed cup of coffee.

Preserving the Past, Enhancing the Present

Beyond its history, our Georgetown cafe is designed to be a gathering place. We’ve re-exposed the original brick and structural details to highlight the character of the building, seamlessly blending old and new. To make the space even more inviting, we added a fireplace, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for the community to gather and connect. Next to the fireplace, we’ve built a community library where customers can relax with a book while sipping on a latte, enjoying a hot croissant, and catching up with friends.

From moviegoers of the past to coffee lovers of today, this space represents a place to connect, relax, and to be inspired — by history, community, and the simple joy of a good cup of coffee.

Compass Coffee GeorgetownWhether you’re stopping in for a latte after shopping on M street, or settling in for an afternoon with a book by the fire, our Georgetown cafe is a testament to our belief that great coffee deserves a great space. And here, in a building that has stood the test of time, we’re honored to bring that vision to life.
