Compass Coffee Turns Historic Georgetown Theater into Vibrant Community Space
Speaking of history, we can’t move on until we talk about how we became a part of it (literally). In 2019, Compass Coffee opened its doors in one of Georgetown DC’s most historic landmarks: the 1940s Georgetown Theater. This transformation was about more than just bringing Real Good Coffee to the area — it was about preserving the integrity of a neighborhood gem.
Outside, you’ll find one of the most striking features of the cafe — a fully restored original neon "Georgetown" sign that serves as a known landmark of Wisconsin Avenue. From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted by design elements that pay homage to the building’s past. The original hand-drawn architectural design from 1949 hangs proudly in the cafe, and the space features restored brick walls, a rebuilt historic marquee awning with vintage lighting, and a ticket counter-style bar adorned with marquee bulbs. We kept the history apparent and visible while adding cozy elements—like our fireplace and big leather couches — to create a warm, inviting atmosphere for coffee lovers to gather.

The Farmers restaurants across D.C. are loved by visitors and locals alike – their other restaurants include Founding Farmers (near the White House) and Farmers & Distillers (near Chinatown).
Cafe Manager Cooper’s Pro-Tip: “The weekday happy hour is an amazing bang for your buck! They have a food menu with things like $3 Mini Cheeseburgers, and the drink menu includes most of their craft cocktails for only $8. Definitely try the Cucumber Delight if you like vodka, and The Constitution if you like gin. The Founding Spirits Barrel-Aged Old Fashioned is also popular with some of my friends.”

Ever heard the phrase ‘shop til you drop’? Well, don’t do that. But if you need a break and some nourishment after all that hard work swiping credit cards, here’s a few Georgetown DC lunch and dinner spots we recommend within walking distance.
Filomena Ristorante
Pasta lovers, rejoice. This famous restaurant has been known as the best Italian restaurant in DC for over 40 years, with am unparalleled fine-dining experience, fine wine, and exceptional service. But before you celebrate too hard, make sure you can get a reservation, as this hot-spot fills up quickly on weekends and especially during the holidays, when they deck out the entire restaurant according to the theme of the season.
Cafe Manager Cooper’s Pro-Tip: “The bread basket is elite. It’s so tempting to fill up on that alone when it’s brought to the table, but hold out for the pasta! It’s worth it. You can always take the bread to-go. ;)”
1063 Wisconsin Ave NW | Filomena Ristorante
il Canale
If you can’t score a reservation at Filomena, Il Canale is an excellent alternative that never disappoints. The only restaurant in D.C. to receive a culinary honor from the Italy-America Chamber of Commerce and the National Institute of Tourism, Il Canale has been recognized with numerous awards over the past decade. Specializing in the rich gastronomic heritage of Naples, it serves up critically acclaimed pizzas, handmade pasta, fresh seafood, and indulgent desserts. It’s also a well-known favorite among celebrities and political figures.
Cafe Manager Cooper’s Pro-Tip: "If it’s a nice day outside, request a seat on the rooftop terrace! It only holds about 10 tables, so it fills up fast. But if you have some time to kill, it’s worth the wait for the views above the Canal."
1065 31st St NW | il Canale
Martin's Tavern
For nearly 90 years, Martin’s Tavern has been a storied landmark in Washington, D.C. It’s where every U.S. president from Harry Truman to George W. Bush has dined, where baseball greats gathered in the famed "Dugout Room," and—perhaps most famously—where JFK proposed to Jackie. Want to relive history? You can even book the exact booth where it happened.

The Fountain Inn DC
This 1783 tavern has been reborn as a cozy rare spirits tasting room, cocktail bar and restaurant nestled in the heart of Georgetown, DC. If you’re a Hamilton fan, this needs to be a must-visit spot.
